Walk into any wheel shop and you'll hear "forged" used to describe almost everything. Cast, flow formed, fully forged — the terminology is deliberately blurred to justify pricing. Here's the honest breakdown.

Gravity / Low Pressure Cast

Molten aluminum poured into a mold. Fast, cheap, structurally unpredictable. Random grain, micro-voids, no directional strength.

Cast Core + Spin-Formed Rim

Rim is spun under pressure rollers — better barrel strength. Center face stays cast. A half-measure dressed up as an upgrade.

01 — Entry Level

CAST
WHEELS

Gravity / Low Pressure Cast

Molten aluminum is poured into a mold and left to cool. The result is a random, porous grain structure with inconsistencies distributed throughout the entire wheel.

Under cyclic stress — potholes, high-speed sustained loads — those voids become crack initiation points. Cast wheels don't warn you before they fail.

Cast Core + Spin-Formed Rim

Starts as a cast wheel. The rim barrel is heated and pressed against rollers while spinning — creating a denser, more aligned grain in the barrel only.

The center face remains cast. Better rim, same unpredictable center. Marketed as forged-adjacent — the structural foundation is still a casting.

A solid 6061-T6 billet is compressed under up to 12,000 tons of force at forging temperature. Every molecule is forced into a dense, directional, uniform grain — throughout the entire wheel, not just the rim.

No voids. No casting porosity. No structural inconsistencies. CNC machining then reveals the final geometry from this uncompromising foundation.

Alloy Selection
6061-T6

Not all aluminum is equal. 6061-T6 is aerospace-grade — heat-treated after forging for peak strength-to-weight ratio. Tensile strength up to 310 MPa. The same alloy used in aircraft structures, high-speed rail, and precision engineering.

Material Discipline

We begin with a 130 lb aluminum billet. 80% of the starting material is removed by CNC — precisely, not approximately. The finished wheel: 26 lbs.

SPLUX Advantage — Fresh Monthly Blanks

If production lead time is less than 4 weeks, most wheels in the market are made from pre-stocked semi-finished blanks. These blanks may develop internal stress due to unstable storage conditions over time. At SPLUX, every custom wheel is forged from fresh 6061-T6 billets produced in the current month — ensuring optimal material stability and structural integrity.
