From Custom Build to Open Road: A Splux C8 Corvette at the Silver State Classic Challenge

When the Road Becomes the Track
Car #502 at the Silver State Classic Challenge — a build story from Nevada Highway 318.
SPLUX Events · Nevada Open Road Challenge 2026 · May 14–17 · Nevada Highway 318
There's a stretch of highway in the Nevada high desert — Route 318 — where the asphalt runs ruler-straight for miles, then without warning throws a sweeping corner at you, drops into a blind dip, and carves you through a canyon you didn't see coming. Every May and September, that road becomes a racetrack.
The Silver State Classic Challenge is the world's fastest legal open road race, holding a Guinness World Record for average race speed. It is not a closed circuit. It is not a controlled environment. It is 90 to 151 miles of real Nevada highway — long fast straights, sweeping bends, blind compressions, and canyon walls close enough to feel — opened for competition, where drivers push their machines to the absolute edge of what physics and engineering will allow.
This May, Car #502 — a 2023 Corvette C8 Z51 in Accelerate Yellow — took that road. And it was rolling on a set of SPLUX SL-C18M Forged 1-Piece Series wheels we built specifically for this moment.
🏁 Guinness World Record · World's Fastest Road Race 353.48 km/h · 219.64 mph average Set by Robert Allyn (driver) & David Bauer (navigator) during the 2017 Nevada Open Road Challenge on Route 318. The Silver State Classic Challenge has held this record since 1988.
Built for This Exact Moment
Our customer didn't come to us for show wheels. He came to us because he was preparing a C8 for one of the most demanding real-world speed events on the planet — and he needed hardware that could handle it without question.
A wheel running Route 318 isn't just carrying speed — it's managing it through everything the desert decides to throw at the car. That demands more than good design on paper. Every SL-C18M in our 1-Piece Series is produced under 12,000 tons of forging pressure — a process that eliminates porosity, aligns the grain structure of the aluminum, and produces a wheel that is measurably stronger and lighter than anything cast. When the loads get complicated and the speeds get serious, that's not a marketing claim. It's the difference between a wheel that was built for this and one that was built to look like it was.
The SL-C18M was spec'd around his Corvette's performance profile with all of that in mind: sustained high-speed loads, thermal stress from the Alcon brake package, and the lateral demands of corners that don't announce themselves. His build already included Alcon Brake Kits (BRK.200520) — our wheels were engineered to clear that system precisely, with no compromise on either side.
| Spec | Detail |
|---|---|
| Wheel Series | SL-C18M Forged 1-Piece |
| Front | 19×8.5 +40MM |
| Rear | 20×11 +52MM |
| PCD / CB | 5×120 · CB 66.9mm |
| Spoke & Barrel Finish | Custom Corvette Carbon Flash Metallic |
| Lip Finish | High Gloss Polished |
| Center Cap | Full Coverage Off-Road |
| Brake Clearance | Alcon BRK.200520 |
The Carbon Flash Metallic spoke finish wasn't chosen by accident. Against the C8's Accelerate Yellow exterior, the contrast is visceral — the kind of visual tension that makes a car look like it's already moving, even standing still in the paddock. But finish is the last conversation we have. The first is always about load ratings, forging spec, and fitment clearance around the brake package.
That's the thing about building for real events: the priorities sort themselves out immediately. The wheel has to survive. It has to perform. Everything else is secondary — even if it still ends up beautiful.
Silver State Classic Challenge
The SSCC is not a track day. There are no runoff lanes, no tire walls, no marshal posts every few hundred meters. Nevada Highway 318 is a two-lane public road that cuts through some of the emptiest country in North America. During the race weekend, the state closes it. And then the cars go.
2026 Nevada Open Road Challenge — New This Year For the 2026 season, the May event has been extended to 151 miles (the original 90-mile course plus an additional 61.38 miles), making it the longest running of the event in recent years. More miles of closed Nevada highway. More of everything.

The beauty of the Silver State is that it's genuinely open. Hypercars, muscle cars, pickups, even a Prius have all toed the line. If your vehicle can average 95 mph or better and meet the safety requirements, you can race. Legally. Down a public highway. As fast as you can go.
What makes an event like this a genuine proving ground for our builds is the reality of it. The road temperature, the crosswind coming off the basin flats, the surface changes where the canyon begins — none of it is scripted or softened. When a wheel shows up here and performs without drama across 151 miles of that, it didn't get lucky. It was built for it.
More Than a Parts Vendor
We have customers who buy our wheels for the look. We love those customers. But the builds that mean the most to us are the ones where someone trusts us with something that genuinely matters — where the wheel isn't decoration, it's infrastructure.
Car #502 represents that. The owner didn't show up to Silver State just to stand in the paddock — he came to race. We're proud that the wheels were part of a package that gave him that confidence.
"A wheel that's been down Nevada Highway 318 at speed isn't the same as a wheel that's only ever been photographed. One has a story. The other is still waiting for one."
There's also this: desert light at speed through a side mirror, snow still on the mountains in the background, the C8's silhouette low and taut over our wheels — that image exists now. It didn't before he asked us to build something worthy of it.
That's the part of this work that we never get tired of.
